What an exciting week it has been! My Monday began with opening the gates to a score of scooters and cyclists all enjoying the fresh air and exercise of travelling to school by their own steam or should I say foot power. The scooter skills and Dr Bike run by Tom from Sustrans has been extremely successful and coupled with bikeability in Y6, I feel the school has really joined together in taking on the challenge of finding alternative and healthy ways to travel to school. Well done to everybody who has taken part so far. YR and Y6 will be scooting next week and we will continue to use the Golden Padlock and record our results in each class. Last week Y6 won a smoothie bike as a prize and I will award a trophy for the class which wins each week. So keep on pedaling and pushing those scooters!!
Last Saturday I was privileged to attend the 5 aside football tournament at West Wight Sports hall with 5 teams from Brighstone. All the teams showed real grit and determination. I was so proud of them and even more so when we came 1st in both the girls and boys tournaments as well as finalists for the other teams. All teams said that playing their own school friends was the most challenging. Well done to them all.
Year 1 have been out and about on a visit to Carrisbrooke Castle and delighted me with tales “Old Fashioned toys” they saw and studied. I am sorry to say many of them I can remember playing with myself…But I was assured “They were really OLD toys Mrs Pugh, much older than you…well nearly.” This is why it is such a joy to teach children, no matter how much you learn about yourself you can always rely on children to tell you how it is and put you in your place!
Finally today, most of the classes have enjoyed a workshop with an Orca specialist who has introduced the children to the wonders of the deep and the creatures that they may see around our beautiful coast line. I know many asked questions about the sad events that have occurred over the last few days, with Sperm Whales beaching themselves on the mainland coast. I hope that this and all the learning opportunities we have given the children over this term will ensure that our world is in safe hands and that the children of Brighstone will be proud protectors of the planet.
Have a great weekend. Mrs Pugh
